We volunteered to make the 2nd INSPIRE Conference 2017: Identity, Impact and Voice a great success

On 12th May 2017, 2nd INSPIRE Conference – Identity, Impact, and Voice took place at University of Hertfordshire, United Kingdom. This event was jointly organized by the School of Computer Science, University of Hertfordshire and ACM-W UK professional chapter. The aim of the conference was to encourage and recognize commitment to advancing the careers of women in STEM employment and research in Higher Education. This one-day conference provided a gateway to hear from world-leading speakers from academia and industries, showcase good practice, learn new skills and form networks of like-minded colleagues.

We, the University of Hertfordshire ACM Student Chapter volunteered to organize and run this event. The team spirit, dedication, and hard work of our chapter members resulted in a very successful conference. Our chapter members professional and also friendly leadership and support was appraised by many conference participants.

There were around 50 participants at the event representing many universities in the UK. The event was chaired by Dr Martina A. Doolan, University of Hertfordshire and Dr Poonam Yadav, Chair of the ACM-W UK Professional Chapter. The event consisted of three keynote speeches, ‘Computer Science as Enabler for Multidisciplinary Research’ by Professor Cecilia Mascolo (Professor of Mobile Systems, Computer Laboratory, University of Cambridge), ‘Where’s the fun?’ by Professor Ruth Aylett (Professor of Computer Science, Heriot-Watt University), ‘Women in technology’ by Gen Ashley (Director of Women Who Code, Lead at Google WomenTechMakers London), a panel discussion on the topic of “Identifying and Negotiating Identity”, and a student poster competition.

Five chapter members participated in the student poster competition and the following prizes were won by our three chapter members.

  • Best poster award – 1st prize (Undergraduate) – Zoe Boucher-Nogher
  • Best poster award – 1st prize (PhD) – Adeline Chanseau
  • Best poster award – 2nd prize (PhD) – Preeti Kandwal

The University of Hertfordshire ACM Student Chapter would like to thank ACM-W UK professional chapter for giving us the opportunity to organize this conference as well as to all attendees for helping us to make this event a memorable.
